Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

California NSF Attorneys

NSF is a rare, degenerative condition associated with MRI contrast dye. NSF affects the skin, connective tissues, and in some cases, the internal organs.

Gadolinium— the cause of NSF

In 95% of NSF patients, the patient received an MRI or some type of imaging scan that used gadolinium as the contrast agent prior to developing NSF.  Contrast agents enable technicians to distinguish between different types of tissues in an imaging scan.  Gadolinium is a rare metal and one of various contrast agents frequently used in MRIs or MRAs.  Patients with kidney dysfunction are unable to flush gadolinium out of their system properly, which may cause NSF in some patients.

Facts, characteristics, and symptoms of NSF

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis:

  • "Nephro" means kidney and "genic" means producing.
  • "Systemic" means affecting the body as a whole or a particular body system.
  • "Fibrosis" is the development of excessive fibrous connective tissue.

Patients who have kidney disease or renal dysfunction are at risk to develop NSF. A relatively new disease, the first case of NSF was reported in 1997, and NSF was established as a disease in 2000.

While researchers deliberate on whether they should completely ban gadolinium use as a contrast agent, NSF is becoming a more widely recognized disease. Here are some NSF characteristics and symptoms:

  • Thickening, tightening and hardening of the skin
  • Skin burning or itching
  • Restricted joint mobility
  • Swelling in extremities
  • Constant pain
  • Muscle restlessness and weakness
  • Deep bone pain
  • Inability to extend limbs or walk
  • Fatality (in some cases)

Effects of fibrosis generally appear first in the arms, legs, and extremities. However, in certain cases, fibrosis may develop in internal organs such as the lungs, heart, muscles, esophagus, diaphragm, eyes, and other tissues.
